If you a fan of the sassy best friend character, that every roncom female lead seems to have, then you definitely should check out this book. There isn't just one gal pal, there's six, or maybe seven. Honestly I lost count. For me the banter was a distraction, that quickly rose to the level of annoyance. By the end of the book I was way past my limit.It might not have been so bad, if the banter, was interesting, clever, or funny, but to me it wasn't any of those things. The banter felt forced. The quips were dull. The playful insults, were too weak. They felt like something one would say to someone they didn't know well, and didn't want to offend, instead of the actual playful sparring of a few close friends. In fact the whole book felt sanitized. As if Melissa Blayden thought her readers couldn't handle actual negative emotions. Even Ellen's parent's gay anxiety freak out, was mild, and short. There were no arguments, there were no hard feelings. If one of the gal pals said anything close to harsh, they immediately would apologize and hug it out. I don't want vicious cat fights, but this seemed unreal to me.Don't get me wrong, the love story, under all the caring and sharing, was solid. Ms Brayden was actually able to build tension, and suspense. An impressive feat, considering the lack of any interpersonal conflict. It just would have been better, if all those gal pals felt real. Oh Melissa Brayden, where to begin. For this particular series, this book is probably the best. Eyes Like Those is actually pretty good too, but it's pretty much exactly the same story as Kiss The Girl, only Brooklyn now has dark hair and a cat and is named Isabel. The second and fourth books in this series are awful, so you could probably skip those and not miss out on much. I'm still upset about Hadley's book, what a waste. Clearly, I've read a lot of Melissa Brayden, and at this point there are certain phrases she uses over and over that drive me nuts. I now officially hate the phrase "good people" and the use of the term "proverbial".Okay, so the review for this actual book. Gia and Elle's growth throughout this book is actually well written and enjoyable to read. The not-as-straight as she thought storyline might seem like an old hand, but I really like how it plays out in this book. This is Melissa Brayden so we aren't hard-hitting here, Elle's coming out goes a little choppy only to smooth out a few pages later with little turmoil. Usually, the tension rising and climax in these books is pretty manufactured, but this one actually makes sense logically. You can see it from a mile, but who cares? Grab a pina colada, set up next to the pool, and escape reality for a little bit where everyone is beautiful and everything works out in the end.
